Vehicle Comparisons:
Toyota Tacoma vs. Chevy Colorado

When it comes to trucks with unyielding structure and convenient technology, read this 2018 Toyota Tacoma vs. Chevy Colorado to see how both have a lot to offer. However, sheer engine power and towing capacity ultimately set these vehicles far apart. Our team at Norm Reeves Toyota San Diego knows which specs matter most to customers in the San Diego, Kearny Mesa, and El Cajon area. That is why we’ve put together this helpful comparison to highlight the many commanding features of the Toyota Tacoma.

To get started, let’s look at performance!

Toyota Tacoma vs Chevy Colorado Performance

With a 3.5L 6-cylinder engine, it’s no wonder the 2018 Toyota Tacoma can reach up to 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. This is due in part to the complex mechanics found in the engine, such as variable valve timing intelligent intake and exhaust or the direct injection fuel system. When joined by dual overhead camshafts, the Tacoma engine is optimized for a streamlined power output.

In addition to the intake and exhaust, the Tacoma includes other intelligent performance technologies, such as a 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with smart four-wheel drive. While this transmission already allows for high traction, automatic limited slip differential is included to further moderate the amount of power allocated to your wheels.

Though these technologies may intelligently increase precision and gripping power in the Toyota Tacoma, they are absent from the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado. The 6-speed transmission with four-wheel drive is bolstered by a traction control system of its own, but does not benefit from the same intuitive equipment of the competition, leaving more room for error. With less starting power from the 2.5L engine, generating only 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque, drivers may find their ride is not nearly as controlled.

Toyota Tacoma vs Chevy Colorado: Technology

The 2018 Toyota Tacoma includes an expansive standard tech bundle in the form of Entune™ audio. This system includes six speakers, USB and auxiliary jacks with iPod®2 connectivity, and advanced voice recognition. Safety is increased with hands-free calling and phone book access via Bluetooth® wireless and Siri® Eyes Free. Lastly, a rearview backup camera is added for total convenience.

The Chevrolet Colorado includes the MyLink® system, which has some aspects of Entune™ like hands-free calling, USB and auxiliary connectivity, and voice recognition. However, it lacks Siri® Eyes Free technology, which can audibly read and send text messages for drivers. It also lacks the helpful Entune™ backup camera, which can increase vehicle safety when backing in a spot or lining up your hitch to a trailer.

Towing & Off-Road

Thanks to a powerful engine and solid frame, the Toyota Tacoma has massive towing capabilities. With the available towing package, drivers can haul up to 6,400 lb of cargo. Trailer sway control will then boost traction and vehicle stability while your cargo stays secure with a Class IV hitch receiver. Included engine oil and power-steering coolers maintain temperature under the hood while hauling, and the 730-amp alternator moderates power flow.

The bed of the Tacoma includes a sleek design. Fiber reinforced sheet-molded composite (SMC) lines the inner bed, while the outside is fortified by steel panels. Storage and rail caps are added for extra convenience, and the powered tailgate is now easier than ever to open and close.

Drivers of the Chevrolet Colorado can only expect to haul up to 3,500 lb in their truck with the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine. Without the engine coolers that are found in the Tacoma towing package, overheating can be a frequent concern. While the Colorado does include cargo lighting and hooks such as those found in the Tacoma, it lacks the easy tailgate and all-weather lining that protects the bed.
