2019 Toyota Corolla Powertrain Review
Drivers of the new Corolla have their choice between two 1.8L I-4 engines:
- 132 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque
- 140 horsepower and 126 lb-ft of torque
The available 140-horsepower engine features Valvematic technology that balances torque and engine power, boosting your fuel efficiency to a maximum EPA-estimated 30 MPG city and 40 MPG highway.1 With the 132-horsepower engine, you can hit a maximum EPA-estimated fuel efficiency of 28 MPG city and 36 MPG highway.1
You can round out your Corolla powertrain with two available transmissions, as well. For total control over your shift schedules, choose the 6-speed manual transmission.
The other option is a continuously variable transmission with intelligence and shift mode. This transmission doesn’t have set gear points, and instead optimizes your performance by offering almost unlimited shift points between the upper and lower limits.
Adjustable Performance Technologies
The Toyota Corolla is designed to offer a balanced blend of drivability and athleticism, as you see with the available drive modes.
If you want to enhance your efficiency, the ECO driving mode on the Corolla LE ECO trim eases the gas pedal output and adjusts the air conditioning to help prolong your time between stops at the pump.
To create an even more exhilarating ride, several trim levels also make a Sport mode available. This makes driving even more fun by adjusting simulated shift points to give your drive a sportier, more dynamic feel.
Standard Safety Technology in the 2019 Toyota Corolla
The 2019 Toyota Corolla features advanced safety features to help keep passengers protected. It comes standard with the Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) system that equips your sedan with several collision mitigation features, including:
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
- Automatic High Beams
It also includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which can help reduce fatigue after a long highway drive. This system lets you set a preferred cruising speed and then automatically adjusts to a safe following distance if you encounter slower-moving traffic.
Our team also likes the Automatic High Beams feature that can help you navigate dark and winding back roads. This feature automatically toggles your high beams on and off when passing other traffic in low-visibility conditions. This way, you can focus more on driving and less on adjusting your headlights.
2019 Toyota Corolla Infotainment Technology
The Entune™ Premium Audio infotainment system includes several music and entertainment features that can make your commutes and road trips even more fun and exciting. This includes a standard 6.1-inch touchscreen with voice recognition, which allows you to select media and make phone calls using your voice—so your hands can stay safely on the wheel.
If you want an integrated navigation system, you can upgrade to the Entune™ Premium Audio system with Entune® App Suite. With an upgraded 8-inch touchscreen display, it includes an Integrated Navigation System that provides accurate turn-by-turn directions to wherever you need to go.
The Entune® App Suite adds an extra level of connectivity by providing access to optimized versions of your favorite apps via the infotainment touchscreen. Through this feature, you can stream compatible internet radio, check traffic and weather, make dinner reservations, or check social media—when it’s safe to do so.
2019 Corolla Interior Dimensions
As a compact car, the Toyota Corolla is agile and highly maneuverable. Despite its size, however, this car offers a spacious interior with enough room for five passengers to sit comfortably.
This sedan ensures the driver and passengers have ample room to stretch their legs with 42.3 inches of legroom in the front, and 41.4 inches in the second row. You’ll also have plenty of headroom, measuring in at 38.3 inches in the front row and 37.1 inches for rear-seat passengers.
When you put it all together, the Toyota Corolla offers 97.5 cubic feet of passenger volume, with the ability to comfortably seat five people. As for cargo space, the trunk offers 13 cubic feet.
Need even more room for luggage? Fold down the rear seat and extend your trunk into the rear of the cabin. With a 60/40 split feature, you can optimize your interior between passenger and cargo space as needed.
High-Tech Convenience Features
In addition to a high-tech infotainment system and a spacious cabin, the interior of the Toyota Corolla offers several convenience features that can give you a greater sense of ease when you settle behind the wheel.
These features include the Smart Key System with Push Button Start. With this system, you don’t have to go fishing for your key in your bag or pocket. Simply press the ignition button with your foot on the brake and watch your sedan come to life. This is especially helpful when you’re running late for work in the morning.
When you reach your destination, parallel parking is simplified with the standard integrated backup camera that shows an unimpeded view of the area directly behind your car. A projected guide path can also help you determine how far you need to turn your steering wheel to squeeze into that spot.
This feature is also helpful when trying to back out of a space in a crowded parking lot—like after your weekly grocery trip.
Leasing a 2019 Toyota Corolla
When it’s time to start considering your options for getting behind the wheel of the Corolla, you’ve got buying or leasing to think about. If you’re not ready to commit to a vehicle purchase, you’re always welcome to hop on a Toyota Corolla lease.
There are several benefits to leasing a Corolla. Aside from not being tied down to ownership of a vehicle, it gives you the opportunity to have a set of wheels to rely on to help you get around to work, errands, and social calls.
Up to a certain mileage, routine maintenance is covered under warranty, so you can get all the service that your Corolla lease needs without having to be financially responsible for its maintenance requirements. You can also see reduced monthly payments than if you had purchased the vehicle.
The main benefit to leasing a Corolla is that you have a car for your needs. It can help you put off a vehicle purchase while having a set of wheels to rely on for a few years. When the lease is up, you have a few options to consider. You can:
- Simply turn in the lease
- Purchase the vehicle out of the lease and pay off its remaining value
- Return the lease and find a newer Toyota to lease to continuously stay up-to-date on the latest features, technology, and style.
